Badminton singles vs doubles: how they differ
Badminton splits into singles and doubles disciplines that play very differently. If you're watching or following predictions, here's what sets them apart.
Court and pace
In singles the side tramlines are out, making the court narrower but the full length in play — it's a game of patience, movement and stamina. In doubles the full width is in play and the game is explosive: flat, fast exchanges and relentless attacking from the back with a partner covering the net.
Disciplines
There are five disciplines: men's and women's singles (MS, WS), men's and women's doubles (MD, WD), and mixed doubles (XD). A great singles player isn't necessarily a great doubles player — the skills and positioning differ a lot.
What it means for ratings
Because the disciplines are so distinct, form in one doesn't transfer cleanly to another. Our model rates each player or pair on their own results, so a strong doubles pairing is judged on its doubles record — not borrowed from singles reputation.
